Basic Information About Dead Zones
A "Dead Zone" is an area of water that has next to no oxygen. This kills all life forms currently living this area and allows no new ones to exist. One of the worst of these zones is in the Gulf of Mexico, where the Mississippi River empties into the ocean.
In the case of the Gulf Dead Zone, nutrients flow into the Mississippi, which flows North to South (Minnesota to Louisiana). These nutrients are placed into the ground most commonly by farmers trying to grow bigger crop yields.
